About Thyme Gardening & Design came about in October 2016 when Peter had had enough of a highly stressful career spanning 30 years and decided to do something he really loved and that would be kind to his health.

He left his job and went back to college to study the full RHS level 2 curriculum for a year. During that time he also worked part time at Churchill College Cambridge as a gardener so that he could get valuable experience in a privileged setting under the guidance of the Head Gardener and his team.

In June 2017 Peter had completed his course taken a number of written exams and passed with flying colours.

He decided the time was right to start his own gardening business so he left Churchill College and set up About Thyme Gardening in Cambridgeshire where he was living with his partner Gill.

9 years on Peter & Gill now work together after Gill took her RHS Level 2 course and Peter added design to his repertoire. They have transformed a number of gardens in Cambridge and the surrounding villages, from Gardening Projects; Planting Plans; design and full implementation including all hard landscaping and large builds from the original designs.

In February 2026 they moved from Cambridge to Spalding and now work part time. They still have 2 large gardens they maintain and Peter still does garden designs and project management, he is currently working for Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service designing and implementing Wellness Gardens for some of their Fire Stations and for their Headquarters in Huntingdon.

They still have some capacity for gardening and design work in the Spalding area and would be delighted to come and chat with potential clients about their gardens and what they would like expert advice on; be it garden maintenance, design, planting plans, irrigation or anything else.

Peter & Gill work on the side of nature & wildlife so you can be assured that pollinators, beneficial animals, birds and insects will be a priority in all they do, this is very important to both of them. Please do not ask them to lay and artificial lawn as the reply may offend!!

For all our hard landscaping we work with a brilliant young builder/carpenter who is based in March. He and his team are outstanding and their work is second to none.

I use local suppliers for all my plants and have done for years. I only supply the best quality plants, be they mature trees from Deepdale Trees in Sandy or plants and shrubs from local nurseries such as: Slootens in Spalding; Gedney bulb company and Jasmine Nurseries near Wisbech.

I supply plants a lot cheaper than from Garden Centres and online and can get pretty much anything.
